2026 National Trail Championships Results: Les Champions Sont Couronnés!

Details
Last Updated: 14 July 2026
English below.

Sarah Bergeron-Larouche (QC) 9:04:43
Claudine Soucie (QC) 9:24:44
Sara Bergen (CB) 9:32:14

Trail long chez les hommes (80 km):
Jean-Philippe Thibodeau (QC) 8:06:09
Dylan Pust (ON) 8:33:04
Benoit Gaillard (QC/RP) 8:33:38

Québec Mega Trail (QMT) hosted the Canadian National Trail Running Championships on July 4th. This was the second year for them as host and this year's event provided significant opportunities for athletes to qualify for Team Canada at the World Mountain & Trail Running Championships (WMTRC) in Cape Town 2027. To be eligible for the National Championships, runners must be members of ACU, as well as Athletics Canada, and be Canadian citizens or have permanent residency (PR). (Eligibility for Team Canada at Worlds extends only to citizens.)

Women's Short Trail (50k):
Élisa Morin (QC) 5:09:12
Leya Masson (QC) 5:35:52
Courtney Brohart (AB) 5:39:55

Men's Short Trail (50k):
Alexandre Ricard (BC) 4:34:21
Dany Racine (QC) 4:43:19
Chris Balestrini (BC) 4:48:33

Élisa Morin successfully defended her NC title from 2025. Ricard added another crowning achievement to his portfolio, after having taking the 2024 NC title in Squamish. Racine, finishing 2nd to Ricard this year, took the NC title in 2025 at QMT. Chris Balestrini, who holds the Canadian Open 50k road record, had a significant comeback after a serious mountain running accident last year. Both Masson and Brohart had breakout performances at this year's event.

Women's Long Trail (80k):
Sarah Bergeron-Larouche (QC) 9:04:43
Claudine Soucie (QC) 9:24:44
Sara Bergen (BC) 9:32:14

Men's Long Trail (80k):
Jean-Philippe Thibodeau (QC) 8:06:09
Dylan Pust (ON) 8:33:04
Benoit Gaillard (QC/PR) 8:33:38

Both 2025 NC's, Soucie and Thibodeau, were back to defend their titles this year, and both came away with auto-selection spots for WMTRC 2027. Bergeron-Larouche claims her first long trail championship title as Thibodeau claims a second straight title. Bergen came away with an auto-qualifying spot to have another opportunity to join Team Canada in 2027. Pust's 2nd place is undoubtedly rewarding, after a 4th place finish in 2025. Gaillard, originally from France, has a goal of obtaining Canadian citizenship.

Canada was proudly represented at the 5th IAU World Championships (WC) on March 14th 2026 by two men, Sergio Raez Villaneuva and Robert Brouillette. Both men, strong marathon runners, were new to Team Canada and set to complete their first official measured road 50km race. The event, originally scheduled for December 2025, was postponed two weeks prior to race day, due to air quality issues in the host city, New Delhi. The difficulties created by the change in date resulted in the loss of two members of our team, one woman and one man. Robert and Sergio successfully negotiated all the challenges in order to toe the line fit and in strong spirits. Given the postponement, some nations were unable to send their teams. 17 national federations were represented, bringing together the best "sprint ultra" runners in the world.

The temperature at the 4am start was 19 degrees and somewhat humid. Sergio set a blistering pace from the start, and led the race until after the 30km mark, with the GBR team closing in from behind. Robert set a steady pace and moved up through the field gradually from 30th position at the start. The two person crew (Lauren Negrazis and Team Manager Bernadette Benson) were ready with fuel bottles, water for cooling, and loud encouragement at the end of each 5km lap. Air quality declined a few hours into the race, but our men continued to come through the crew tent at the JLN Stadium with focused, strong mindsets.

Sergio finished in 9th place, in a time of 2:54:47. This is the strongest male performance ever in the 50k WC (fastest and first top 10). The Canadian flag was the fourth to be held aloft, after finishes by GBR, LTU, and JPN. Robert finished in a well-paced, strong 26th position, with a time of 3:14:21. Both men finished with qualifying standard times for the next World Championships, despite the challenging race conditions. The depth of Canada's potential in this event is apparent and we are excited for 2027!
